Last Sunday, mothers in the Chinese province of Sichuan laid roses in memory of their children, killed or missing in the terrible earthquake that hit the province on 12th May this year. The Chinese authorities have acted swiftly and efficiently to assist all those injured or displaced by this natural catastrophe. A very different picture from that in June 1989 when protesting students were violently dispersed from Tiananmen Square in Beijing by those same authorities.
Last Sunday, in Chester, members and supporters of the local group of Amnesty International laid roses in remembrance of those who died or disappeared as a result of this crackdown on 4th June 1989. The mothers of the missing students have been denied this human right by the Chinese government.
“We have taken photographs and will be sending copies to the Chinese Ambassador to the UK,” said Patsy Bradbury, chairman of the group. “We hope that our action, and those in other British cities will persuade the Chinese authorities to relax their ban and release full details of those who died and were imprisoned as a result of the crackdown.”
